Mangotsfield United…2 Didcot Town…4
With thanks for match report facts from Jon Morgan
This tie ended in dramatic fashion, in extra-time, when ‘Diddy’ Manager Andrew Ballard came on as a late substitute and within moments netted to push the game to their advantage.
It had been a similar sort of game as the first meeting had been, at The Loop Meadow Stadium, when ‘The Railwaymen’ enjoyed the better moments of the first half, whilst Mangos had been stronger after the break.
Didcot took the lead in the 11th minute when captain Adam Learoyd nodded home a corner from Morgan Williams. 0-1.
It was the visitors who were asking the questions at this point, and Mangotsfield, who had re-signed keeper George Dorrington, to replace Andrew Hannah, who is Evesham bound, were thankful to him when he produced a flying save to deny Caelen Isaac.
It was 20 minutes before the hosts produced a chance of note. A strong goalbound header from Kyle Tooze brought a reflex save from Leigh Bedwell. It was from a breakaway in the 32nd minute, that Mangotsfield levelled through Jordan Williams. 1-1.
Within 10 minutes of the re-start, the hosts were ahead as Luke Spokes found the room on the left to slot home. 2-1. For most of the second-half there was no real threat from Didcot, but as the game went into stoppage time, timed at 90 +7 minutes, a free-kick from Michael Alexis was headed home by Cameron McNeil. 2-2.
So, with a new rule for the FA Trophy, that teams would be allowed a fourth substitute if extra-time was needed, Didcot Manager Andrew Ballard came on the in the 97th minute. A cross into the near post by Brett Gardner, clipped the post, bounced onto George Dorrington, and dropped in front of Andrew Ballard just a yard from goal. 2-3.
At the half-way stage of extra-time, ‘Diddy’s’ passage to Kent was secured when from a Brett Gardner corner, Cameron McNeill was given the space for a close-range header, and his second goal of the night. 2-4.
Didcot now have a tough trip to Folkestone Invicta and we wish them the best. We had matched ‘The Railwaymen’ in most areas, but they were sharpest when it came to putting the ball in the net!!
