Mangos make cup progress...at last!
Saturday 13th October 2018, The BuildBase FA Trophy – Preliminary Round Attendance 114
Mangotsfield United…3 Kidlington FC…0
After two seasons of poor results in FA competitions, Mangotsfield overcame Kidlington with a gritty and hard-working performance, in blustery conditions, and are ‘in the hat’ for Monday’s draw.
Playing against the wind in the first-half, the hosts did not settle well and ‘The Greens’ had a lot of possession, and when their efforts were on target, they found keeper Lochlan Robertson equal to the task. Jamie Calvin, Ben Willoughby & Brad Singh all tried their luck from distance, but lacked accuracy. Mangotsfield took the lead in the 37th minute when a pin-point cross from James Bloom found Kyle Tooze, and his well-directed header gave keeper Sam Warrell no chance. 1-0.
Tooze again went close with a dipping volley, whilst Kidlington’s Ben Willoughby headed over from 6 yards.
The hosts continued to move forward, now with the wind at their backs, and again, Tooze went close with a volley which just cleared the bar. However, ‘The Greens’ looked a threat at times, and when Jordan Williams lost possession in midfield, they broke dangerously and it took a superb saving tackle from Colin Mugoya-Tabingwa, as he chased back from midfield.
Lochlan Robertson held a strong volley from Ollie Stanbridge and when Jamie Calvin broke free on the left side of the area, the blustery conditions took his shot away from the far post.
Jordan Williams atoned for his earlier slip, in the 63rd minute when he took a weighted pass from Kyle Tooze, and planted a low drive into the bottom corner. 2-0.
Lochlan Robertson saved low from Jamie Calvin, whilst at the other end, Kyle Tooze did well to set up a chance for Louis Britton, who was having a tough time against the Kidlington defence, but he was always posing a threat.
The tie was sealed in the 80th minute when the industrious Louis Britton chased what looked like a lost cause, but was able to turn and create an opportunity for substitute Clayton Fortune, who sent a rocket-shot into the roof of the net. 3-0.
Having played for us a few seasons ago, it was Clayton’s first goal for the club. Also good to see Chris Lane back with us after a lengthy spell away, as he made another late appearance, after coming on at Fleet.
So, a well-earned win for Ollie & Deano’s improving side.
