Early cup exit
Tuesday 4th September 2018, The Southern League Challenge Cup Attendance 73
Mangotsfield United…1 Larkhall Athletic…2
Mangotsfield’s return to Southern League Cup action, ended with a quick exit, as other cup competions seem to do these days! Manager Ollie Price made several changes to include younger players who had not had much game time, and whilst no one was disappointed with their application, it was the predatory instincts of Larkhall’s Lewis Powell & Matt Groves which dictated the outcome. New signing Sonnie Low was included in defence.
Louis Britton was quick off the mark with a shot on the turn which Shaun Semmens held down low. Omar Simpson tried his luck from distance and a free-kick from Jordan Williams pass harmlessly wide. Louis Britton was proving very active up front, together with Tyler Jackson, and it was a while before ‘The Larks’ produced anything of note when Matt Groves saw his 20 yard volley clear the far post.
Mangos took the lead after 31 minutes. A long ball down the middle saw keeper Shaun Semmens come to the edge of the area, as Louis Britton challenged, but the awkward bounce of the ball deceived him and it fell to the following Adam Hockey who swept it home 1-0.
Two minutes later, ‘The Larks’ were level. As the ball bounced around the goalmouth, Matt Groves was quickest to react and he lashed the ball high into the net. 1-1.
Just before the break, Lewis Powell had a snap chance, but he fired over the top.
Mangos started the second-half positively, but were lacking a real goal threat. Jordan Williams broke down the left but his low ball across the face of the goal found no one. Moments later a Williams free-kick drifted wide of the far post. Larkhall started to look menacing, with Mason Winter volleying over from 20 yards, and in a goalmouth scramble, a lofted ball into the box grazed the crossbar.
In the 63rd minute, Geraint Bater sent Alex Lambert down the right flank, and his low shot from the right-hand edge of the box was stopped by the outstretched leg of keeper Cameron Clarke. However, the predatory Lewis Powell was following through and he tucked the rebound into the far corner.1-2.
Chances were limited for The Mangos after this point and Harry Hope might have added to the scoreline, but his close-range header was well held by Cameron Clarke.
Mangotsfield’s winless run continues and they have now lost their last seven matches at Cossham Street. There is no game on Saturday 8th, which is FA Cup day.
