Mangos crash out of FA Trophy
Saturday 7th October 2017, The Buildbase FA Trophy – Preliminary Round, Attendance 110
Mangotsfield United….0 Thame United….1
There was a debut for new signing Simon Gilbert, but Mangotsfield, with a lack of a cutting edge, were unable to make any impression on a resolute Thame defence, and crashed out of the FA Trophy to a very late goal.
The visitors started strongly, with the wind at their backs, and Dan West glanced a header just wide, and Ben Connelly also had a good header just off-target before Luke Ricketts had a good effort saved from distance. Ed Weeks produced a good sliding tackle to block a dangerous corner, and it took ‘The Field’ a little while to find their feet.
Laurent Davis-Wilson headed wide from a Jake Elliott cross, as did Simon Gilbert, moments later. A threaded pass inside from Jay Malpas, found Robert Hobbs, but his effort was also too high.
Thame were forced to re-shuffle when they lost centre-back Nick Harrison to injury, but they held firm. A good run and cross down the right from Jake Gardner looked dangerous but Jake Elliott was unable to connect, and Thame threatened just before the interval but George Dorrington saved low from Luke Ricketts.
‘The Field’ started the second period with a little more zest and Thame’s David Lynn was forced into a goalline clearance. Davis –Wilson tried his luck from distance with a strong left-foot volley. He also attempted a cheeky lob over the keeper, but Craig Hill was alert to the obvious danger.
Jake Elliott made a strong run down the right, but his finish was wayward. Nick Peare’s 20 yard free-kick was only just a little high before a deep corner into the Thame penalty area caused a massive scramble. The visitors threw bodies in the way as Nick Preare & Ed Weeks had shots charged down.
With the game in the 88th minute, Mangos keeper George Dorrington came out for an outswinging cross, but failed to collect and presented Dan West with the easiest of chances to poke the ball home and send the Oxfordshire side through to the next round.
Mangotsfield’s search for a win continues.
