Odd Down FC (BATH)...1 Mangotsfield United...0
A real 'Downer' for Mangos
Saturday 19th August 2017, Emirates FA Cup – Preliminary Round Attendance 99
Match Report Dave Smale
Odd Down FC…1 Mangotsfield United…0
Our poor FA Cup record in recent years of losing to lower league sides continued with this very disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Toolstation League side Odd Down in windy conditions at Combe Hay Lane.
With the wind behind us in the first half, Mangotsfield could have scored inside 20 seconds when Odd Down keeper Ed Baldy fumbled the ball, but as it rolled loose, George Lloyd turned and fired the ball over the bar. On 7 minutes, in another Mangos attack, there was a hint of handball by a home defender, but after a cross had come over from the right, Jordan Williams fired the loose ball into the side netting. The home side began to come more into the game & helped by a strong back-line marshalled by giant defender Luke Hall-Cousins (who once made a single subs appearance for Mangos in 2009/10), their midfield also began to win most of the challenges. Their first real chance came on 23 minutes when Hall-Cousins fired wide following a corner, but 2 minutes later they were ahead, when Asa White curled a direct free kick around the wall & past Steve Phillips into the net. Two minutes later, White saw his header saved by Steve Phillips as Odd Down threatened again. After that, the game settled more into a midfield battle with little happening at either end, but we almost equalised on 44 minutes when Jordan Williams’ right wing, wind-assisted cross bounced off the top of the bar and out of play.
HT: Odd Down 1, MUFC 0
Early Mango pressure after the break, with the wind against us, came to nothing, with Liam Monelle’s low shot saved on 48 minutes. Josh Jones then saw his header go wide on 57 minutes & Liam Monelle then fired over the bar on 64 minutes, but Odd Down were generally soaking everything up that came their way, as well as trying to catch us on the break with long balls down the middle. That tactic almost paid off on 84 minutes when a long ball breakaway move down the middle saw Caelen Simpson fire wide as Steve Phillips came out to narrow the angle. With time running out, Jordan Williams saw a free kick saved & then Liam Monelle fired over the bar. Five minutes of stoppage time also came to nothing, with a late Mango corner being cleared as Odd Down’s strong back line stood firm to help the Bath club to a hard-earned win.
Congratulations to Odd Down & good luck to them in the next round.
