Mangos edge home at The Lawns!
Match Report Dave Smale
Cribbs FC… 1, Mangotsfield United… 2
Jake Elliott’s late 30-yard wonder strike settled this closely and evenly contested friendly match at Toolstation League side Cribbs, who gave us a real competitive test on the day.
With 7 players unavailable, we were down to the bare bones on the pitch, but the lads who played dug deep to earn us our third successive pre-season win. Apologies for the lack of a Cribbs line-up, by the way.
Our first goal attempt came on 2 minutes, with Sam Jenkins seeing his shot saved by the home keeper, but we found ourselves 1-0 down after 7 minutes, when the Cribbs No 7 cut in from the right & fired a low drive into the left hand corner past Steve Phillips. Nevertheless, we bounced back immediately & were level inside 60 seconds, when Jake Elliott came in from the right side, took the ball down the bye-line, passed into the box &
Darren Edwards lifted the ball into the roof of the net. Two minutes later, the Cribbs No 7 almost gave his side the lead again, following a neat move, but he fired wide from 15 yards. A dangerous Cribbs free kick was deflected over the bar on 17 minutes, after which much of the action came from midfield, as both sides took the game to each other. Our best chance in the rest of the half came from a fiercely-struck goal-bound 20-yard free kick by James Fisher which was somehow kept out of the net by the home keeper with a great block. There were half chances for both sides in the rest of the half, but at the break, it was still anyone’s game.

Early exchanges after the break were even, but on 53 minutes, the Cribbs No 15 broke through the middle, only for Steve Phillips to save his shot well. We kept plugging away, but as the half wore on, there was little to choose between the sides, with a draw always looking likely. Following a spell of Cribbs pressure, Jack Harris headed a corner kick just over the bar on 70 minutes, but then back came Cribbs on 75 minutes when their No 12’s header was well saved by Steve Phillips. The match was duly won, however, on 80 minutes when from seemingly nowhere, up popped Jake Elliott to brilliantly fire home a rising 30-yard drive which gave the home keeper no chance.

So well done to Boris & the team for a hard-earned win, with so many players unavailable & thank you to Cribbs for allowing everyone in for free today!
