Mangos edge home

Report by Dave Smale

Ashton & Backwell United...0, Mangotsfield United...1

Steve Davies, who has returned to Cossham Street this season, grabbed the vital goal to give Mangotsfield their first victory of pre-season, against a hard-working & tough-tackling 'Stags' side.

Our first real chance came on 10 minutes when Tom Warren crossed from the right & Steve Davies’ header was saved by home keeper Lewis Coombes. Five minutes later, Davies’s clever chip from 20 yards was only just tipped away by Coombes & a frantic goalmouth clearance led to a corner. Next up came Lewis Hogg, whose free kick on 20 minutes was also saved by Coombes. Ashton & Backwell’s first goal attempt came on 25 minutes when Sol Shearer’s 25-yard free kick went just over the bar, with Steve Phillips watching it all the way. Kyle Knott’s first of many darting runs down the left side on 27 minutes led to a superb cross which Darren Edwards was so close to connecting with, but a home defender managed to nip in first & clear the ball away. Our hosts then forced several corners, one of which then saw winger Miles Hardridge fire over from 15 yards (35) & then the Stags went even closer, only to see Tom Warren clear the ball off the line (39), but we stood firm defensively to remain intact. Two Kyle Knott runs in quick succession then caused problems in the home defence, but the final chance of the half came on 42 minutes with Stags defender Aaron Read heading wide from a free kick.

We started strongly in the 2nd half, with the lively James Fisher seeing his shot cleared away (47) & then Jake Elliott headed wide from a free kick on 51 minutes. Fisher was then sandwiched in style by home defenders Ryan Crouch & Sam Thomas, with the referee having a word with the pair of them, but taking no further action. We then went very close on 57 minutes, with Josh Jones heading just over, following Darren Edwards’ clever flick-on. The Stags’ first goal attempt of the 2nd half then came on 58 minutes when winger Conor Biggins fired a low, dangerous shot across goal which went narrowly wide. However, we deservedly took the lead on 62 minutes when substitute Sam Jenkins, with his first touch of the ball, crossed from the left wing & Steve Davies flicked the ball home at the near post with home keeper Lewis Coombes beaten.

Meanwhile, James Fisher’s runs down the wing constantly caused problems for the hosts & it was no surprise to see Stags defender Ryan Crouch receive a yellow card on 72 minutes for one too many rash challenges on Fisher. Meanwhile, Lewis Hogg went close on 75 minutes when he fired over the bar from 20 yards after receiving a loose ball & he went close on 2 further occasions before the end of the match. The final action of the game came on 89 minutes when Stags forward Conor Saunders volleyed wide after a late spell of pressure, but overall, we stood firm to claim a hard-earned & deserved win.
