Brimscombe & Thrupp 1 - 0 Mangotsfield United
Lilywhites sneak win
Report by Ron Loftus
Mangotsfield Utd’s first visit to The Meadow proved to be a very good workout against a strong, physical home team, who have been training for two weeks and have already played a pre-season game. In the end we only used 14 players as the following had picked up slight knocks in training or were away on holiday: Lewis Hogg, Jack Harris, Kyle Knott, Nick Peare and Tom Warren.
We played very well in the first half with new signing Ed Weeks looking very strong in the centre of defence. The second half saw continuous roll-on/off substitutions and the game became a bit scrappy although we created the better chances and hit the bar with a shot from George Lloyd after a flick-on from Darren Edwards. Then Liam Monelle just failed to connect with a ball across the 6-yard box as we looked the side most likely to score.
Just after ‘Boris’ decided to experiment with 3 across the back, a cross from the right found Brimscombe’s Dave Woodfield unmarked at the back post and he netted with a close-range header, and this proved to be the only goal of the game.
The spirit amongst the players and management seemed good and it was explained that the first two friendlies were scheduled for Friday nights as the team will be training again on Monday.
