Pre-Season Opener Ends In Stalemate
After the postponement of Monday evening's fixture Mangotsfield United's opening pre-season friendly ended goalless in a match of few clearcut chances at Ironmould Lane.
Manager Richard Thompson ran the rule over a number of players as he continues to build a squad for the forthcoming league campaign.
A Brislington side which starts the league season two weeks prior to Mangotsfield and clearly ahead in terms of preparation looked much the better side in the first half.
It was the hosts who created the first opening on ten minutes after a long clearance from former Mangotsfield goalkeeper Chris Humphries wasn't cleared and with the ball breaking free on the edge of the penalty area a low strike bobbled wide of the left hand upright.
Danny Greaves was called into action for the first time with eighteen minutes played when saving, at the second attempt, a harmless looking free kick from twenty five yards.
Mangotsfield's only notable chance of the half came at the midway point after Kyle Tooze did well when winning the ball in central midfield to send Paul Banks away only for the former Cirencester Town striker to shoot tamely at Chris Humphries.
The final action of the half came with seven minutes remaining as Danny Greaves did well, saving a low strike from twenty yards which bounced awkwardly just in front of him at the foot of his left hand upright.
During a second half in which Richard Thompson made ten changes there was an improvement in terms of Mangotsfield's possession and ability to work the ball around but despite this chances remained at a premium.
A Brislington side which made fewer changes during the match created the first chance of the second period on the hour mark with an attack on the left which saw the ball worked inside only for the strike to be directed straight at Danny Greaves.
For Mangotsfield second half substitute Josh Klein Davies went closest to breaking the deadlock on sixty eight minutes when meeting Tom Parrinello's free kick from the right only to guide a glancing header just wide of the right hand upright.
With three minutes left substitute goalkeeper Cameron Miller was called into action when making a save low down to his left.
Squad 1. Danny Greaves, 2. Neil Arndale, 3. Charlie Rich, 4. Nick Dunn, 5. Dale Peckham, 6. Lee Marshall, 7. Kyle Tooze, 8. Clayton Fortune, 9. Paul Banks, 10. Luke Palmer, 11. Lewis Parker, 12.
